CHAPTER SEVEN

“Go with my blessing and return safe when you may,” Lady Sally Anne told them as most of Harrowmont’s residents gathered inside the gates to see them off.

Privately, she had told Ridge to “kick their asses,” which made him smile to recall and was much more in keeping with her fiery personality.

Toland shared a tearful farewell with the Green Knoll monks, preparing to leave the company of the men he had known his whole life. He kept up a stoic façade as they rode out of the gate, but Rett knew that Toland minded the separation sorely, especially since they headed into the dangerous unknown.

After a candlemark on the road, Toland seemed to shake off his thoughts, taking in the countryside around him with wonder.

“I can’t believe I’m actually outside,” he marveled. “I never left Green Knoll’s compound, and we came directly into Harrowmont. This is the first time I’ve seen what the real world looks like.”

“What do you make of it?” Ridge was genuinely curious. He knew that their work and the difficulties he and the others had faced probably shaded his own viewpoint.

“The land is beautiful with all the hills and trees,” Toland replied, “even in this season. I’m sure it’s even prettier in the summer.” He gestured toward the horizon. “We’ve barely gotten started, and we’ve passed so many houses and farms. I know we’re skirting the towns, and I understand why, but I wish we could stop at all the pubs and talk with the people. I want to hear their stories!”

Ridge couldn’t help liking Toland for his enthusiasm and optimism. I hope the crown doesn’t dim that too quickly. Court politics is enough to make anyone jaded and suspicious. Maybe with the right advisors, some loyal nobles, and the monks to help him, Toland can hang onto his best qualities to be the king Landria needs.

“You aren’t missing much with the food,” Rett observed. “Most pub fare is edible but nothing to remember—for the right reasons, anyhow. Same with the ale. As for the stories, while you can’t walk around by yourself when you’re king, you wouldn’t be the first to go out in disguise with some loyal guards to hear what the people are saying.”

Kane glared at Rett. “Don’t go putting dangerous ideas in his head. There’s a lot of work to be done before that’s a possibility.”

Toland laughed. “I think you’re too late to worry about ‘dangerous ideas.’ Look at what we’re doing!”

Even Kane had to admit the prince had a good point. “Just promise us you won’t sneak off on your own. Makary’s not the only bad person out there. Until we get to the palace, let’s all try to be as invisible as possible.”

Kane and Malachi rode in the front, both wearing swords. Malachi’s magic and Kane’s knives meant they were ready if trouble found them.

Henri and Toland were in the middle. Henri, as usual, had a matchlock plus more weapons under his coat, and one of his saddlebags carried oil bombs.
